What we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do with it. Written to be read, not skimmed past.
Last updated 1 August 2026.
The short version
BangkokConnect is free and does not sell personal data or run behavioural advertising. We collect the minimum needed to run an account, publish what you choose to publish, keep the platform safe, and understand which pages are useful.
You control what appears on your public profile, and you can export or delete your account at any time from settings.
What we collect
- Account data — email address, and name and avatar if you sign in with Google. Passwords are hashed by our authentication provider and never visible to us.
- Profile data — anything you add: name, headline, bio, photo, neighbourhood, role, company, languages, interests and links. Each field has a visibility control.
- Content — events, communities, listings, guides, posts, comments, reviews and messages you create.
- Activity — saves, follows, registrations, memberships, and aggregate page analytics (which pages are viewed, from which type of device).
- Support and reports — messages you send us and reports you file.
- Technical data — IP address and browser information collected by our hosting provider for security, rate limiting and abuse prevention.
Why we use it (lawful basis)
- Contract — to give you an account, publish your listings, deliver messages and notifications.
- Legitimate interest — moderation, fraud and spam prevention, security, and aggregate analytics to improve the platform.
- Consent — newsletter and marketing email, and any optional analytics cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation — responding to lawful requests from Thai authorities.
What is public
Published events, communities, spaces, business listings, jobs, guides, reviews and comments are public and indexable by search engines and AI crawlers. Your profile is public only if you set it to public, and each of neighbourhood, company and social links has its own toggle.
Private messages are visible only to the people in the conversation and, where a report is filed, to moderators reviewing that report.
How long we keep it
- Account and profile data: until you delete your account.
- Published content: remains after deletion only where others have replied to it, and then in anonymised form.
- Messages: 24 months after the last message in a conversation.
- Moderation records and reports: 24 months, to enforce repeat-offence rules.
- Analytics events: 14 months, in aggregate.
- Contact messages: 12 months after the issue is closed.
Your rights
Under Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act you can ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, or withdraw consent. Most of this you can do yourself in settings; for the rest, contact us and choose the privacy topic.
We verify identity before acting and respond within 30 days. If you are unhappy with the outcome you may complain to Thailand's Personal Data Protection Committee.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is restricted by row-level security rules so members can only read what they are entitled to, and administrative access is limited and logged. No system is perfect — if we discover a breach affecting you, we will notify you and the regulator as required.
Children
BangkokConnect is not intended for under-18s and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a minor has an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Changes and contact
We will post material changes on this page and notify signed-in members. Questions about this policy or a data request: contact the team. See also our cookie policy and terms of use.
